High School Media Specialist
205 Day Position
Reports to the Principal
School Year: 2024-2025
Location: Blackville-Hilda High School
Position is open until filled.
All applicants must have a valid South Carolina Media Special Certificate or anticipate certification prior to the 2024-2025 school year. (Certification Code 60.)
The Media Specialist is responsible for working collaboratively with school administration, staff and faculty to develop a library program that:
- supports grade level curriculum.
- supports literacy instruction and development.
- ensures a media center collection rich in both print and non-print materials.
- fosters a positive learning environment.
- supports school and district-wide goals.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and other staff to develop assignments that are instructionally sound and include key critical thinking, literacy and social skills, and instructional technology.
- Provide active learning experiences and opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students.
- Promote reading in innovative ways.
- Create and maintain an inviting, safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
- Ensure flexible and equitable access to resources that supports students’ academic and personal learning needs.
- Provide leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats.
- Ensure equitable and ethical use of information.
- Encourages staff and students to access library/media center and its resources.
- Plans, develops and encourages selection and purchase of age/interest appropriate literary and media materials in collaboration with students and staff.
- Evaluates continuously the media program and plans ahead for future growth and development with the building administration and teachers.
- Coordinates special events and book fairs in the library.
- Informs students and staff of available technology/media and assist with its integration in the classroom.
- Attends appropriate staff and departments meetings regularly.
- Promotes flexible scheduling of large groups, small groups, and individuals to ensure effective use of library media services and materials.
- Conducts orientation lessons for teachers and students.
- Provides materials and instruction in the use of library media center resources into classroom instruction and assignments.
- Plans library promotions, displays and the like to promote library use and the appreciation of literature.
- Maintains a facility that is inviting, attractive, and conducive to learning.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
