Special Services Aide – Teacher Assistant 

Contract: 185 Days

School Year: 2024-2025

Position is open until filled.

 

Job Description: Under the supervision of the Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Special Services, and under the direction of a certified staff member, performs the necessary duties to assist in the planning and implementation of a special education program for the special education classroom.

 

Education/Certification:

  • Must have at least one of the following:
    • 60 hours of college credit
    • Associate's degree
    • Passing score on the Para-Professional Examination
  • First Aid, CPI, & CPR training preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to assist in instructing life skills, transition skills, reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Ability to work well with special needs children.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage challenging behavior.

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Background to include activities that involve special education students and an interest in working with special education students.
  • Experience working within a student centered instructional environment.
  • Experience or education in the areas of child development.

 

Instructional Support:

  • Provide instructional support under direct supervision of the special education teacher.
  • Conduct instructional activities assigned by the teacher; work with individuals students or small groups for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts; and assisting students in reaching their academic IEP goals and/or grade-level standards.
  • Implement, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in improving students’ academic success through a defined course of study.
  • Supervise special education students and assist with behavioral infractions or restraining as directed in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Implement and follow Teacher Assistant schedule provided by the special education teacher.
  • Assist in classroom management.
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials.
  • Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment as needed.
  • Assist teacher with administrative records and preparation of required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, emotional support, and a friendly attitude and general guidance.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Adhere to the appropriate code of ethics and student confidentiality. 
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g. student injuries, altercation, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

 

Student Management:

 

  • Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside the classroom. This supervision is not limited to but includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

 

OTHER RELATED FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION:

 

  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Special Services, or special education teacher for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective support for student academic and behavioral success.
  • Other duties may require personal care assistance or lifting, as needed, for special education students.
  • Location of Special Services Teacher Assistant may be changed as needed at the discretion of the District and as recommended by the Director of Special Services.
